Jambic Yuyu Yuraguna: a reunion with ancestral knowledge in the Ecuadorian Andes

Summary
Contextualized in interdisciplinary, multi-ethnic and interlingual experiences, this presentation shows how the conjoint work between indigenous communities and the academy offers us the ideal tools to re-encounter ancestral knowledge and create new forms of linguistic-cultural revitalization from the very own voice of the speakers. To do this, it focuses on the reflective description of the Andean Voices and Ancestral Knowledge project developed in three provinces of the Ecuadorian Sierra. It shows how from the narratives and the use of linguistic software it has been possible, not only to elaborate a living ethnographic lexicon that accounts, from the voice of its actors, their conception of health and disease, forms of diagnosis and treatment, prescriptions and proscriptions, but it has also fostered instances of intergenerational communication, crucial relationships for the (re)valuation, maintenance and linguistic-cultural reinforcement. Finally, we refer to the importance of creating bridges between the different actors in research processes and to better understand the dynamics of still existing community relations with the environment, its history, its present and its future.

Keywords: Ecuador, Andes, ancestral wisdom, medicinal plants, collaborative methodology

7 avril – Séminaire DIC-ISC-CRIA : The Centrality of Emotion to Language

Par : Arthur Glenberg

Résumé :

Think about the content of language in venues other than academia (e.g., conversations among friends, novels, movies, musical lyrics, etc.): it is predominantly about emotions and feelings. Furthermore, the relation between emotion and language is not just in regard to content. I will review literature demonstrating the impact of emotion at multiple levels of language including phonology, prosody, syntax, word meaning, sentence comprehension, and discourse structure. The talk will end with a couple of suggestions for why there is this strong connection and what it implies.

Because this is a new area for me, I don't have a lot of my own work to cite.  I have attached a couple of articles, but my advice to students is to skim them: They play a role in the talk but none is central.

Finally, now that this is arranged, I will reveal my non-negotiable fee: a Université du Québec à Montréal t-shirt.  For several years, I have been collecting t-shirts from places where I give talks. I think that I may now have the world's greatest collection of university t-shirts. They make great souvenirs (in both the English and French etymological meanings), they are functional, and wearing one is a subtle way of showing off.

31 mars – Séminaire DIC-ISC-CRIA : From Decision Support Systems to Recommender Systems

Par : Pascale Zaraté

Résumé :
Decision Support Systems (DSSs) emerged in the early 1970s. We can find in the literature several definitions of these systems and a large amount of work has been done. During all these years of research the architecture of these systems has evolved, and we assisted to the introduction of Artificial Intelligence components giving to these systems the name of Recommender systems. Recommender systems are now very used in daily life platforms, i.e., Amazon etc. The way how Recommender systems are developed and implemented, considering users’ preferences, will be presented in this talk.

10 février – Séminaire DIC-ISC-CRIA : AI and inclusion - How about African NLP projects ?

Par : Dr Houssein Ahmed Assoweh

Résumé :

AI has nowadays become an indispensable lever for economic and technological development and especially for reducing the digital divide in developing countries. However, Africa lags far behind in this area due to the weakness of its infrastructure and the lack of data to develop applications using machine learning. This lack of data is especially penalizing in the field of languages, since with more than 2000 languages spoken in Africa, few have the linguistic resources; many African languages risk disappearing in a few decades if nothing is done about it by the NLP and AI communities. Thus, the development of linguistic data remains essential to initiate cutting-edge research in AI such as neural machine translation, automatic speech recognition, language understanding, etc.

This presentation is about our current research, which concerns the automatic processing of African languages in general and the Somali language in particular, which is an Afro-Asiatic language spoken by approximately 23 M speakers living mainly in 4 countries of the horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti). We will discuss the different methods used to build bilingual or parallel corpora and their utility for the construction of neural machine translation systems from and to Somali, with English or French as the target or source language.

Bio :

Dr Houssein Ahmed Assoweh is currently a professor in computer science and director of the mathematics and digital research center at the University of Djibouti. He obtained a doctorate in computer science in 2019 from the University of Grenoble-Alpes, France.

His postdoctoral studies were carried out within the NLP group of CRIA-UQAM, with the PCBF funding. His research lies at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS), and focuses on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computational Linguistics and Machine Learning, especially for the development of artificial intelligence applications and tools for African languages among other under-resourced languages.
