How do we use language creatively to describe the open-ended array of contexts we encounter? While linguistic and psycholinguistic theories have commonly assumed that words with fixed-in-advance meanings are the key conveyers of content, this presentation brings together linguistic, behavioral, and neural evidence that combine to demonstrate that formal constructions that combine words into sentences help to shape the interpretation of utterances.
